BREAKING Strike: Justice Souter Retires

I had to discuss this before I went to bed. Justice David Souter, who has been on the Supreme Court since 1990, announced today that he will be leaving the court at the end of the current term in June. President Obama will thus be making his first Supreme Court nomination in the next couple of months. This will not significantly affect the balance of power on the court. Although Souter was appointed by George H.W. Bush, he has shifted significantly to the left over the years. He has long been a defender of Roe v. Wade, and almost always sides with the other liberal justices. We'll have much more coverage on this tomorrow, including suggestions for who President Obama might pick.
