I found your post while searching for 1st amendment implications if the mosque is prevented as I am writing a paper on it for my college class. I'm writing particularly about the mosque that is being challenged by a group of severely prejudiced conservatives in Murfreesboro, TN. It's created a ridiculous circus.

I really liked your article and would love to quote some of it in my paper.

The last part with the poem from the Nazi era really speaks so strongly.

Love the line about 'more Kirk than Spock.' I deeply respect the Spock-like cool and intelligence of Obama, but now realize he also needs the Kirk-like swagger and passion to 'bring it home.' Americans seem to want a president who 'acts' like a leader (to wit, W), whether he's an actual leader or not. Obama IS an actual leader - he just needs to show us more of that Kirk-like side. He's got it in him, as we all now can see, so let it rip. Kirk and Spock in one package - imagine the possibilities!

Yes! I agree with you.Seeing how Obama came alive in the last month has been inspiring, again. I hope he can make the case clearly to the rest of the country why it is so important that health care change. Not much of the bill takes effect this year, so people will need to believe that it will work out for their best interests, or they will listen to Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck et al, and vote more republicans in. Basically, your columns are so far left, it's amazing. Mass. is one of the most liberal states and 22% of registered dems voted for Brown. Independents were for Brown. obama is a socialist and so is the dem leadership. Finally, the public is realizing this and you so-called progressives are in for a rude awakening come November. Great question. The seat is currently in Republican hands, and I think the GOP has a solid chance of holding it regardless of whether Crist or Rubio wins the primary, mostly because Democrat Kendrick Meek isn't a great statewide candidate.

As for Rubio, I would say he's at least even money right now to win the primary against Crist. The right-wing has looked at the Rubio-Crist race as a litmus test of whether conservative insurgent candidates can knock off the GOP establishment. Rubio has a lot of grassroots support from hardline conservatives. Whether that translates into votes, I don't know. But it is far more likely to help him in a closed Republican primary than it would be in a general election.

At this point Afghanistan seems like a lose-lose all the way around. No matter what the President's decision, it looks like he will take pressure and heat from both sides of the aisle.

And I agree with Mr. Strike, having the announcement at West Point is terrible. I think the address should come straight from the White House, no weak phot-ops please.

Also, on the point of the deficit and unemployment, Mr. Strike is right again. You can't lower the deficit without increasing employment. As far as the economy is concerned, decreasing unemployment should be the highest priority. And, if unemployment really does go down, Obama's numbers should climb.

And on Health Care, I almost don't want to comment, but I am still very confident that we will have Health Care Reform before the State of the Union Address in January. So lets just keep our eyes on the prize.

this is totally bizarre... she doesn't want to be a lame duck governor, so she just quits! I find this excuse is pretty lame also. btw, as long as she doesn't say she will not run for reelection, she's not in a lame duck position. The whole thing just raises more questions.

Every other day there're news about Palin, ranging from a running challenge to the President (what's the deal with the national policy btw?) to this bombshell... I really do not know what to say about her bizarre behavior.
